Research Methods
The survey was conducted between August 27th and September 14th, 2025.
Data was collected using a specialized research panel with national coverage, and participants did not know the nature of the survey topic until they had opted in to consider their participation.
The survey took approximately 15 minutes to complete.
Who participated ?
In line with the aims of the Social Acceptability Barometer: Canadian Mining Industry, a sample closely matching the 2021 Canadian census data was collected from across the country.
Regions
Collection by region
Data was collected from all Canadian provinces.
5,490 surveys were completed; 4,811 were retained after data cleaning, for analysis.
Regions
Mining vs. Non-Mining
Major mining provinces such as British Columbia and Quebec, other mining regions, and non-mining regions were all targeted for collection to allow meaningful comparisons.
Mining vs. Non-Mining
Regions
Urban vs. Non-urban
Participants were recruited from urban areas—as defined in the Canadian census as Census Metropolitan Areas (CMA)—and non-urban areas, in proportions matching 2021 census reporting.
Urban vs. Non-urban (CMA/RMR)
Demographics
Age Distribution
All participants were 18 years or older.
Compared to the 2021 census data, older and higher-educated participants were slightly overrepresented.
Demographics
Indigenous Identity
Participants were asked if they were First Nations, Métis, or Inuit. For analyses that used indigenous status as a variable, Inuit participants and those who preferred not to say, were not reported due to low sample sizes preventing meaningful analysis.
Indigenous status closely reflected the Canadian national population as captured by the 2021 census data.
Demographics
Gender
Participants were asked to describe their gender by selecting from: "Male", "Female", "Non-binary", "Prefer to self-describe", and "Prefer not to say."For analyses using gender as a variable, options other than "Male" and "Female" were not reported, due to low sample sizes preventing meaningful analysis.
The gender of participants in the sample closely matched data from the 2021 census.
